Home»Industry Trends» The Import Value of Chinese Semiconductor Equipment Soared by 46.5% in 2023
According to the latest data released by the General Administration of Customs, Chinas imports of machinery and equipment for manufacturing semiconductor devices or integrated circuits showed significant changes in 2023. Despite a decrease in import volume, the value increased by 46.5% year-on-year, indicating Chinas substantial investment in the semiconductor industry and growing demand for high-end manufacturing equipment.
In December 2023, China imported 1,245 units of machinery and equipment for manufacturing semiconductor devices or integrated circuits, with a total value of $3.35 billion, averaging $2.69 million per unit. Compared to the same period last year, import volume increased by 29.3%, while the value surged by 190%. After consecutive month-on-month declines in import value in October and November, December saw a 15.5% month-on-month increase, although the average unit price dropped by 6%.
For the entire year of 2023, China imported a total of 11,885 units of related machinery and equipment, with a total value of $27.4 billion. Compared to the previous 12 months, the average unit price was $2.31 million. This indicates that despite a 24.1% year-on-year decline in import volume, the import value increased by 46.5% year-on-year.
This data reflects Chinas deep investment in the semiconductor industry. In recent years, amid global semiconductor supply chain tensions and technological competition, China has increased investment in semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, particularly in the introduction of high-end manufacturing equipment. These devices are crucial for improving domestic semiconductor manufacturing technology and capacity.
Additionally, this growth also demonstrates Chinasforeign tradeadjustment in trade structure. Against the backdrop of a complex and changing global economic environment, China has promoted domestic industrial upgrading and transformation by introducing high-end manufacturing equipment. This not only enhances the competitiveness of the domestic semiconductor industry but also has a profound impact on the global semiconductor industry landscape.
